Research interests

Research area: Dr. Besner?s research involves a growth factor known as heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF), and its ability to protect against intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury. The lab conducts both in vitro and in vivo studies, the latter using animal models of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury, to study the protective effects of HB-EGF on intestinal injury. Studies focus on the effects of HB-EGF on nitric oxide and oxygen free radical production, apoptosis, bacterial translocation, cell proliferation and migration and signal transduction pathways.
